International Baccalaureate (IB) was founded in 1968. It is a nonprofit foundation that offers 4 distinct programmes. These include primary years, middle years, diploma, and career-related programmes. Students from age 3 to 19 are eligible to be admitted to these. There are over 5000 IB World Schools (IBWS). The IB board is renowned for its excellent, quality curriculum that moulds well-rounded, motivated, and knowledgeable students. IB is a “global education community”. It helps connect the system of education across the globe. The IB curriculum, in 1976 was adopted in India and currently, there are over 140 Indian schools that follow the same.
The IB curriculum promotes creativity and experiment-based learning. It helps the students become global citizens. The international syllabi create confident, independent, and socially aware students. Through the IB board, the students learn time-management skills as they are required to find a balance between the activity and theory-based learning. The IB curriculum is not overly concerned about grades. The students get to choose from a range of subject groups and each topic under a subject is extremely detailed.
The grade 9 IB students are part of the Middle Years Programme (MYP). Students aged 11-16 are eligible to enroll for MYP. The curriculum is detailed and each subject requires at least 50 hours of teaching. In the final two years of the program, students have many subject groups that they can choose from. These subjects cover global topics and have local relevance. There are 8 subject groups: language acquisition, language, and literature, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education, and design. The students of years 4 and 5 can select six out of the eight subject groups.
