Schema markup is a small block of code that states your business facts in a format machines trust over visible page text. Add LocalBusiness, Organization and FAQPage schema first — these three cover most of what Google and AI search tools need to confirm who you are, where you operate and what you answer. A WordPress SEO plugin can generate all three without a developer, usually inside one afternoon.
Open the source code of most small business websites in Mumbai and you'll find the same gap: a homepage that clearly states the business name, address, phone number and services to a human reader, and absolutely nothing that states the same facts to a machine reader. Search engines can usually infer these details from visible text, but inference is a guess, and guesses are exactly what schema markup removes.
This isn't a cosmetic SEO tweak. It's the difference between a search engine assuming what your business is and a search engine being told, in a format it was built to trust.
Schema Markup Is a Structured Data Layer Search Engines Read Before Your Page Copy
Structured data, in one sentence
Schema markup (built on the vocabulary at schema.org) is JSON code embedded in your page that labels facts explicitly — this is a business name, this is a phone number, this is an FAQ answer — instead of leaving a search engine to parse plain sentences and guess at what each piece of text means.
Your page might say "Call us on 98199 55197, open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm, in Borivali West." A human reads that instantly. A search engine has to parse natural language to extract a phone number, a location and a set of hours from it, and natural-language parsing is inherently less reliable than a labelled data field. Schema markup states the same facts as: telephone: "+91-9819955197", addressLocality: "Borivali West", openingHours: "Mo-Sa 10:00-19:00". Nothing to infer.
Four Schema Types Cover Almost Every Small Business Website
You don't need every schema type schema.org defines. For most small businesses in India, four types do nearly all the work.
| Schema type | What it tells search engines | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| LocalBusiness | Name, address, phone, hours, service area, price range | Knowledge panels, local pack, map results |
| Organization | Legal name, logo, official social profiles, founder | Brand knowledge panel, sitelinks |
| FAQPage | Direct question-and-answer pairs already on your page | Expandable FAQ dropdowns in search results |
| BreadcrumbList | Where a page sits in your site's structure | Breadcrumb trail shown above the title in results |
A fifth type, Review or AggregateRating, is worth adding only once you have genuine, verifiable customer reviews to reference — never populate this with invented ratings or testimonials. If you don't have real reviews yet, skip it entirely rather than fabricate one.
Schema Markup Is Now Foundational to GEO and AEO, Not a Separate Task
Structured data used to be framed purely as a Google feature — something that earned you a star rating or a bigger search snippet. That framing is outdated. AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews parse the same schema.org markup when they decide which sources to cite and quote.
FAQPage schema is the clearest example. It hands an AI tool a ready-made, unambiguous question-and-answer pair to quote directly, instead of asking the model to extract an answer from a paragraph of prose. If you've read our piece on GEO and AEO for Indian businesses, schema markup is one of the concrete, buildable foundations that whole strategy sits on — not a separate technical checkbox.
Content answers the question for a human. Schema answers the same question for a machine, in a format it doesn't have to guess at.
Adding Core Schema Takes One Afternoon on WordPress, No Developer Required
If your website runs on WordPress — the majority of small business sites in India do — an SEO plugin generates most of this for you through a settings form.
Install Rank Math or Yoast SEO if you don't already have one
Both free plugins include a "Local SEO" or "Business Info" settings panel that generates LocalBusiness and Organization schema automatically.
Fill in exact business details, not approximations
Legal name, full address, phone number in international format, precise opening hours and your actual service area — inconsistency between your schema and your Google Business Profile listing weakens both.
Turn on FAQ schema for any page with a real FAQ section
Most SEO plugins include an FAQ block that auto-generates FAQPage markup as you type — use it instead of writing FAQ schema by hand.
Validate with Google's Rich Results Test before you consider it done
Paste your live URL in and fix every error and warning it flags — a page with broken schema can be worse than a page with none, since errors surface in Search Console as ongoing issues.
Submit the URL for indexing in Search Console
This isn't required, but it noticeably speeds up how quickly Google recrawls the page and picks up the new markup.
Custom-built websites without a CMS, or schema types a general SEO plugin doesn't cover well — Product, Event, Course, Service with detailed pricing tiers — are the real reasons to bring in a developer. For the four core types above, a plugin is genuinely enough.
Google's Rich Results Test Catches What Search Console Reports Weeks Later
Search Console's "Enhancements" reports are useful, but they're retrospective — they tell you about errors Google already crawled and logged, sometimes days or weeks after you published. Google's free Rich Results Test tool checks your markup instantly, against the live page, before you move on to the next task. Run it every time you edit schema, not just once after the initial setup.
Every Website Digiwiz Media Builds Ships With Core Schema From Day One
We don't treat schema markup as an add-on service sold after the website is live. LocalBusiness, Organization and FAQPage schema go into the build itself, the same way navigation and page speed do. When we rebuilt Hamara Ashiyana's real estate website from zero, structured data was part of the foundation that helped it reach a #1 Google ranking for its target keywords — not a fix applied after the fact.
Questions business owners ask about schema markup
Does schema markup guarantee a rich result in Google?
No. Adding schema makes your page eligible for rich results like star ratings, FAQ dropdowns and business info panels, but Google still decides whether to display them. Clean, accurate schema paired with genuinely useful content earns rich results far more often than a page without any, but no code guarantees it.
Which schema type matters most for a small business in India?
LocalBusiness schema matters most — it confirms your name, address, phone number, service area and hours in a format search engines trust over visible page text. FAQPage schema is a close second, since it turns your existing FAQ section into eligible dropdown rich results and gives AI tools ready-made answers to quote.
Can I add schema markup without hiring a developer?
Yes, for most small businesses. On WordPress, plugins like Rank Math and Yoast SEO generate LocalBusiness, Organization and FAQPage schema through a settings form, no code required. A developer becomes worth it only for custom schema types like Product, Event or Course that a general SEO plugin doesn't cover well.
Does schema help with ChatGPT and AI search, not just Google?
Yes. AI answer engines crawl and parse the same structured data Google does, and clean schema gives them an unambiguous, machine-readable summary of who you are and what you do. This is exactly the kind of foundational signal GEO and AEO strategies depend on, alongside clear, direct on-page answers.
How long does it take for schema changes to reflect in Google?
Google has to recrawl the page and then separately decide whether to show a rich result, so expect one to three weeks for the change to register in Search Console, and longer before any rich result actually appears in search. Submitting the URL in Search Console after publishing speeds up the recrawl step.
